L'acétaldéhyde en air intérieur : métrologie et niveaux mesurés

Abstract : Acetaldehyde is one of the major indoor air pollutants due to its human health effects; it has been classified as probably carcinogenic to humans by IARC (2A), and its ubiquitous sources being primary or secondary, intermittent or permanent. Conversely to outdoor concentrations which are about a few micro g m-3, indoor levels are usually an order of magnitude higher. Indoor air guide values will be published in 2013 by the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES). Acetaldehyde concentrations in indoor environments are measured with the same methods used for carbonyl compounds in general and formaldehyde in particular. The more commonly used are based on active or passive sampling on derivatising agent coated adsorbent cartridges. It is worth mentioning that work to be published in 2013 are currently in progress to evaluate active and passive cartridges capacity to measure acetaldehyde. Generally, mean indoor acetaldehyde concentrations are weak, ranging between 13 and 16 micro g m-3 (whatever the environment or the geographic localization, Europe, USA) but always higher than outdoor concentrations. Shopping malls distinguish themselves from other environments with mean concentrations three times higher. Nevertheless, occasionally; concentrations can reach peak values as high as 176 micro g m-3 for example in a French school, suggesting the importance to consider short term exposure and highlighting the necessity to develop real time measurement technique for on-line monitoring and source detection. This king of technique is still not available.
