In risk studies, in the definition of accident scenarios, both external and internal causes should be examined. Among external causes, the following are usually included : natural phenomena such as earthquakes, tornadoes, tropical storms, flooding, lightning, as well as external technological causes related to transportation, such as airplane crashes. This publication will deal only with lightning as the initial cause of a major tschnical accident It will involve experience feedback from prior accidents. notably the case of an explosion in an aluminum foundry, which was investigated by the authors in detail in the context of a pluridisciplinary team.
