Earthquake Impacts on Industrial Facilities. Lessons Learned from Wenchuan Earthquake (12 May 2009, Sichuan Province, PR China). Research Perspectives

Abstract : On 12 May 2008, Sichuan Province (PRC) was hit by a 7.9 magnitude earthquake, leaving more than 70 000 dead, and causing above 16 billion Euros damage. Although the tremor did heavily impact industrial facilities, causing major accidents, post-quake investigations provide only limited information on these natural-technological (NaTech) events. INERIS (France) and JRC (Italy) have joined in November 2008 to survey a selection of impacted industrial facilities. This communication presents the results of this mission. These include: typology of damage; comparison of observed equipment response to state-of-the-art; discussion of France methodological approach to accident risk assessment for industrial facilities located in earthquake-prone areas
