Methodology developments for measuring biogas emissions from landfill surface

Résumé

Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is now a worldwide issue. Although landfill industries have seriously reduced their gas emissions in the last years, some improvements are still possible. Efficient leakage detection procedures are needed to achieve this task. ISSeP and INERIS have developed their own methodologies based on experimental sampling of local surface emissions and the production of interpolated maps. Taking advantages of both methodologies, this paper focuses on the choice between several bell probes and between IR and FID analyzers. The relationship between measured methane concentrations and fluxes measurements is also investigated. It appears that concentrations are measured with the best temporal stability and accuracy using an IR analyzer connected to a large bell probe (Ø 50 cm). At this stage, the way concentrations and fluxes are measured and compared does not allow to establish good enough relationships for the concentration to be used as an auxiliary variable for the estimation of fluxes. Further works will concentrate on this point
