A new modelling approach to assess air quality over urban areas

Résumé

A high resolution simulation over Europe has been performed with the chemistry transport model CHIMERE. In the framework of the EU-LIFE EC4MACS project, a simulation of the full year 2009 over most of Europe (at 0.0625x0.125° resolution) has been produced. The CHIMERE version (Bessagnet et al, 2010) used for this study has undergone several modifications including an update of the SNAP2 primary particles material emissions especially for the eastern European countries and the use of a population density proxy to regrid SNAP2 emission. We also introduced a modulation factor based on the 2m temperature to take into account the differential domestic heating and to redistribute the SNAP2 emissions along the year. Additional modifications to account for the specificity of the urban meteorology were also added to lower the vertical diffusivity and wind speed values. A description of the model performances will be carried out. A comprehensive evaluation was performed using both observed data from the Airbase and EMEP databases at rural and urban background observation sites. Various statistical indices were selected, including: standard deviation (s), correlation index (R), root mean square error (RMSE), fractional bias (FB), fractional error (FE) and index of agreement (IA), for their ability to diagnose the model performance from different perspectives. We also describe a new approach based on CHIMERE outputs to calculate Urban Increments (UI) for the main pollutants. In fine, the idea is (i) to better quantify the origin (local, regional or trans-boundary) of primary and secondary pollutants concentrations over urban areas, and (ii) to apply this new methodology into integrated assessment models such as GAINS (Amann et al, 2011).
