Abstract : The Gardanne colliery lies between Aix-en-Provence and Marseille and is part of the south-east complex of H.B.C.M. (Subsidiary of the Charbonnages de France group). The coal deposit is from fluvio-lacustral origin and was formed some 75 millions years ago. The stratigraphical sequence is mainly composed by limestone (qualified äs hard and brittle) and mudstone.
