Seuils de toxicité aiguë utilisés lors d'émissions atmosphériques accidentelles de produits chimiques

Abstract : The aim of this study is to review and describe acute toxicological thres-holds used in case of accidental release of chemicals. At the European and international levels, several acute toxicological thresholds are available and may be used in risk assessment by decision-makers. These acute thresholds are determined for lethal, irreversible and reversible effects, which may be observed in the exposed population. The available thresholds are the SEL and SEI in France and the ERPG, AEGL, EEI, IDLH at the international level. In France, SEL and SEI should be used for land-use planning. When such values are not available, the ERPG and by default the AEGLs may be used. At the European level, in the context of the Seveso II directive, the European project ACUTEX proposes a methodology to develop harmonised thresholds or AETLs. In Conclusion, different acute exposure threshold levels are available for the determination of the effects of toxic atmospheres after accidental releases of chemicals. These thresholds based on differents methodologies and developed for different purposes may be difficult to use for a non-expert. At the European level, a harmonised approach is currently in process.
