Essai collaboratif d’intercomparaison sur le prélèvement en rejet canalisé pour la mesure des métaux et de certains paramètres physico-chimiques. Impact des opérations d’échantillonnage sur la variabilité des résultats d’analyses

Abstract : An inter-organizational sampling trial was performed by Aquaref at Boissettes in the wastewater treatment plant, France, to assess the variability in measured concentrations of metals, volatile organic compounds and others parameters as total organic carbon and anions. This trial was the first national attempt at improving knowledge of the effect, in wastewater, of sampling activity in regulatory monitoring. The sampling site was selected for its technical and logistical characteristics. The trial was organized over a period of 2,5 days in January 2012. The organizers (Ineris, LNE) were in charge of site selection, sampling schedule planning and protocol. Three targets were identified by the organizers : to observe and to evaluate the water sampling practices on wastewater in relation to the operational and technical guide “sampling and sample pretreatment for the analyses of priority and emerging micropolluants in sewages treatment plants” made by Aquaref; to establish the impact of sampling on total variability; to study the accuracy of field parameter measures, such as pH, conductivity and temperature. Nine participants were chosen. Each participant was required to provide some information on his own equipment (commercial brand, identification/quality procedures, measurement range). The aim was to estimate the distribution of the measurement instruments used on field and to evaluate the influence of equipment on the results. To reduce the analytical impact on trial results, all samples were collected by Ineris. The institute was in charge of transportation and chemical analyses for all substances. Ineris supplied all materials to carry out sampler blank, to samples collection and storage. All data are collected on a standardized form provided by the organizer, in order to ensure homogeneity of information. Data evaluation was carried out by the statistical tool developed for this purpose. The treatment was performed by robust analysis according to standard NF ISO 5725-5. The estimate for the variability of sampling was obtained by comparing the overall variability obtained by the robust analysis approach and the analytical variability determined on the day of the trial. Overall results are : All those tests highlighted the potentially large variability in measured pollutant concentrations that can arise, and identified that is necessary to follow improved sampling protocols. In particular, the organizer displays the fundamental role of sampling blank analyses to detect concentration anomalies and potential sampling contamination.
