Current status in nanodust explosion topic

Résumé

The explosion properties of combustible dusts are described by safety characteristics. The determination of the safety characteristics of nano dust is the basis of risk assessment for the implementation of safety barriers in a plant. So far, explosivity of nanopowders has been investigated only to a small extent and their specific properties raise the following concerns: - The increased specific surface area could lead to an increase of ignition sensitivity and explosion severity at the nanoscale; - Some nanopowders could exhibit a pyrophoric behaviour when the particle size is sufficiently small; - Increased surface area may increase oxygen adsorption at the surface of the particles and results in increased passivation, which may decrease ignition and explosion severity; - The nanopowders tend to form microsized agglomerates which may decrease the explosion severity. Such concerns are already known for microsized dusts and especially for reactive metallic dusts but so far, there is no assessment of the suitability of the current test protocols and apparatus to investigate the explosivity of nanopowders. More specifically, the purpose of this presentation is to report on-going discussions at EU level on the following questions: - Considering the current standard approaches, the current procedures are not adapted from an occupational safety perspective. How to investigate explosivity of nanopowders safely? - Are the current standardized approaches adapted to assess the explosivity of nanopowders? Do the current standard approaches lead to underestimate/overestimate explosion severity of nanopowders? Which explosion behaviour is to be expected for nano-dust explosions? - Is the explosion violence of nano dusts higher than that of micro dusts? - What is the influence of agglomeration and passivation on safety parameters? - How to scale-up the explosion safety parameters at larger scale? Is there a specific “nano” behaviour? Answering these questions will provide elements to make a conservative and safe assessment of explosion risks induced by powders containing nano-objects. This presentation aims at presenting the current available knowledge and on-going discussions at EU level in 2017.
