Green management of waste and subsidence in mining activities: case studies for the mines of the future

Abstract : During extraction and after closure, a mining project interacts with surface through gas and water emissions, waste management, subsidence and landscape perturbation. The I²Mine European FP7 project aims at developping innovative methods and technologies necessary for the mines of the future. One of its tasks concerns “Green mining” with the objective is to list and describe potential impacts that may be generated by mining activities on the environment as well as mitigation methods. Mining waste management and subsidence risks are interrelated during the exploitation and the abandonment phases of the mine life cycle. Best practices regarding the environmental management of wastes and subsidence are proposed by the way of case studies.
