The Aerosol Chemical Monitor Calibration Center (ACMCC): a new facility for the quality control of ACTRIS-2 Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM) measurements

Résumé

The European research network for aerosol, clouds, and trace gases (ACTRIS-2), includes a large number of world class observing stations and participants. The large spatial extent of this network requires that operating procedures are put in place to ensure that measurements are performed in the same way with the same level of quality assurance. This will ensure that measurements can be compared across all of Europe including locations at different altitudes and regions (Urban vs Rural). As part of the EU-FP7 ACTRIS project, several calibration facilities were established to ensure that aerosol measurements made within the framework of the ACTRIS network are of the same high operating standard. These calibration centers are also a useful learning tool, allowing groups to take advantage of the knowledge of the combined European community. Recently, the Aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ACSM) developed by Aerodyne has been installed at several monitoring stations within the ACTRIS network. This instrument is designed to provide in-situ measurements of submicron aerosol chemical composition on a continuous basis. Within ACTRIS 1, a first intercomparison of these measurements was performed end of 2013 at LSCE facilities in the region of Paris (Crenn et al., 2015; Frohlich et al., 2015). This intercomparison included 15 mass spectrometer instruments (1 HR-ToF-AMS, 1 ToF-ACSM, and 13 Q-ACSM) and has shown the strong potential of the ACSM instrument to deployed in EU networks and providing robust and comparable datasets. However, it also highlighted several issues that need to be address and to be carefully followed by each user when performing calibrations. As part of ACTRIS 2, the calibration center for aerosol chemical composition (ACMCC) has been created to ensure homogenous and high quality aerosol chemical measurements throughout the ACSM sampling network. The ACMCC infrastructure is located at the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement (LSCE), Gif/Yvette), in the region of Paris (France), and is managed by CNRS (LSCE and LaMP) and INERIS. The infrastructure aims to provide Quality-assurance of on-line chemical aerosol monitors and capacity building to perform high-quality chemical in-situ aerosol characterization. We are providing here a general presentation of ACMCC facilities and the operating of these facilities under ACTRIS2.
