Caractérisation numérique et expérimentale de l’endommagement durant l’excavation d’une saignée et son reconfinement

Abstract : The existence of an excavation damaged zone (EDZ) around a storage gallery may reduce the efficiency of the storage to confine radionuclides. Andra (French National Radioactive Waste Management Agency) is developing a new concept for storage sealing, based on the excavation of radial slots in the EDZ. Those slots have a low thickness and are filled with bentonite swelling bricks. Numerical and experimental approaches have highlighted the effect of the slot as a hydraulic barrier. The experimental results confirm the mechanical phenomenon and deformation level described by the numerical modelling. Therefore, the numerical modelling is suitable for reproducing and predicting the mechanical behaviour of the excavation and the rock mass. Moreover, ultrasonic velocity surveys of the vicinity are able to monitor precisely rock mass perturbations. These results have contributed to validating the slot barrier concept developed by Andra.
