Comportement à long terme de la craie

Abstract : Chalk mine pillars are submitted to mechanical loading and to variations of water saturation that can be due to seasonal environmental changes as water level fluctuations, hygrometry, temperature or atmospheric pressure. Hydraulic modifications may affect the long term stability of pillars. In order to analyze the behaviour and strength of such material, several experimental investigations at different scales (microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic) have been conducted on saturated, partially saturated and dry chalk samples. The microscopic scale analysis was performed in an Electron Scanning Environmental Microscope (ESEM). Water retention properties and a series of high pressure controlled suction odometer mesoscopic compression tests were carried out on chalk samples extracted from a pillar. The macroscopic scale concerns the monitoring of several variables (temperature, moisture, strains) in a pillar of the abandoned Estreux chalk mine (France). These three scales were considered in order to determine accurately the general features of the chalk hydromechanical behaviour. The potential impact of the water content variations on the mechanical behaviour of the chalk has been realized based in the frameworks of the classical unsaturated soils mechanics. Suction hardening was clearly identified, resulting in increasing yield stresses with suction. Collapse under wetting at constant applied vertical load was also observed. Rate dependency and two principal failure modes (shear and pore collapse) were observed and formalized. In situ observation shows irreversible displacement and strains evolution with hygrometry.
