Modélisation numérique explicite de l’initiation et de la propagation de fractures rocheuses

Abstract : Studying the performance of rocks subjected to industrial operations (mines, underground storages, geothermal, etc.) requires a good understanding of their response to varying stress fields up to their failure. Fracturing of rock is one form of energy dissipation that allows to restore the energy balance in the rock material. The aim of this research is to enhance the numerical modeling of the initiation and propagation of cracks or fractures in rocks in order to enhance the capabilities to predict the performance of deep underground structures. A critical review of the approaches developed to tackle this issue has led us to choose the discrete approach and more particularly the numerical code “Yade”. Developments have been made to evaluate the different forms of energy dissipation involved in rock behavior. Validation of the energy approach was carried out by simulating laboratory tests. The evolution of the different energy components permitted to verify that the energy balance was correctly evaluated. The energy balance approach was also verified at mesoscopic scale by simulating the underground excavation of a real mine-by-test experiment conducted in the past. Another application was the modelling of an iron ore mine pillar in Lorraine. These applications yield good prospects for better modelling ruptures of the host rock and enhance significantly the security and performance assessment of underground operations
